An IMAX facility is coming to West Ashley, according to the website of Southeast Cinemas. The Charlotte-based company last spring bought the land beneath the old AMC Citadel Mall 6. In April, the movie theater came under new ownership. By summer’s end, the venue was closed before being demolished throughout the fall. Early on, the company said it planned to construct a 55,000-square-foot, 16-screen, stadium-seating multiplex that featured 2,600 seats and two digital 3-D auditoriums. At first, a company spokesperson said there were discussions to add an IMAX facility, but later on retracted that information. The web page announces that a newly named “Citadel Mall IMAX Stadium 16” is “coming soon.” Bryan Smith, Southeast Cinemas spokesperson, would not confirm or deny that an IMAX would be part of the facility, because comprehensive plans have yet to be approved by the City of Charleston. Smith said complete details of the new facility will be announced in about a month. —John Stoehr
