A new effort by conservatives to talk women out of abortions requires a 24-hour waiting period between an ultrasound and an abortion. Approved by a subcommittee on Tuesday, it’s part of the larger effort to chip away at abortion rights.

The interesting part is the subcommittee’s refusal for a rape-victim exception. Their logic is telling:

… The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Greg Delleney, argued a rape that results in a pregnancy has two victims – the woman and the fetus.

“It doesn’t make that child any less of a child,” said the Chester Republican. He said many “fine people” are born despite being conceived during a rape, and the crime shouldn’t automatically discount the child’s worth.

It absolutely makes sense that if you belive that life begins at conception, you’d be equally disgusted at any early abortion, regardless of the circumstances. That said, this certainly informs the debate on abortions. If these conservatives get there way and are able to make abortions illegal, there won’t be any exceptions.
