News of James Marshall, the artist otherwise known as Dalek, sent a jolt of electricity down the spine of the grassroots arts scene. Dalek is revered for his geometric works and his signature Space Monkey character. When they learned he was coming, people freaked. Then they got busy. With the help of eager participants, Marshall transformed Redux Contemporary Art Center from a studio collective into a gigantic exhibition space. Insiders say the exhibit, called Broken, Beaten, and Buried, was the biggest thing to happen to the arts organization, even putting Redux on the national arts map.
