When Nick Shalosky noticed that no one was running for an empty seat on Charleston County’s District 20 Constituent School Board, he decided to throw his hat into the ring as a write-in candidate. He turned to his friends on Facebook and urged them to vote for him. Evidently, 22 of them did. And now the state of South Carolina has its first openly gay elected official.
