Community Supported Agriculture

Last spring, Lowcountry farmers started letting locals buy shares in their farm’s summer growing season. For a small investment at the beginning of the season, shareholders received a box of vegetables each week during the harvest. It’s called an investment, because there’s no guarantee the crops will come in, but despite the risk of not getting anything, locals were eager to take part in the programs, offered for the first time last year by Rita’s Roots, Ambrose Family Farm, and Legare Farms. The CSAs filled up quick. After an article in the Post and Courier, Legare sold out of the shares almost instantaneously. It’s a great idea, and one that helps sustain our local farms, who have found it difficult to survive in these modern times. Sign up early if you want to get in on the fresh fun this summer.
