John Holenko and Hazel Ketchum, married classical guitarists, perform together as the Hungry Monks around town, busting out mandolins, Celtic tunes, and some serious musical chops. But that’s just what they do on nights and weekends. Their day job is running their studio Hungry Monk Music, where they and an accomplished staff offer classes in piano, guitar, mandolin, violin, banjo, drums, bass, and voice. The eclectic space is tucked on a back street in West Ashley and reflects John and Hazel — unpretentious and playful yet serious about music. Here, kids can feel free to explore — whether it’s in the Music for Young Children program or with a group guitar class. In the summer, they have a School of Rock music camp that lets kids unleash the rock star inside, and they host regular family-friendly performances and workshops, such as the recent shows by Orrin Starr, the gypsy punk band Luminescent Orchestrii, and local band Sol Driven Train. If you’re hoping to nurture a budding Joan Baez, this is the place to start. —Stephanie Barna
