We lost him for a while when he was editor of one of the most prestigious literary journals, The Southern Review. But Bret Lott couldn’t stay away for long. He returned a couple of years ago to reclaim his place at the College of Charleston and continue his role as a teacher whose students have no idea he’s a best-selling author. Students might not know him, but Oprah does. Yes, that Oprah. She picked Lott’s Jewel for her book club. Lott’s literary star has been ascending since. July saw the publication of his seventh novel, Ancient Highway. Maybe it’s a stretch to say it’s due to moving back home. What’s certain is that he’s one of Charleston’s best.
