Proprietor Mike Able, his two sons, and the small staff at Haddrell’s in Mt. Pleasant know their stuff — not only when it comes to rods, reels, lures, repairs, and big gear, but also the how and where in the local fishing scene. Whether anglers are interested in fly fishing, trolling, surf fishing, or off-shore adventures, just about everyone on this staff can guide them from personal experience (five licensed captains and four professional mates make up part of the management team). The main store has been situated in a red, barn-like building at the intersection of Coleman and Chuck Dawley boulevards for over 25 years (a new store in West Ashley opened recently in the South Windermere shopping center). The store’s website offers regular off-shore and in-shore fishing reports from staffer Scott Hammond. The aisles are stocked to the gills with nets, weights, hooks, reels, clothing, various boat fixtures, shoes, books, and tidal charts. They’ll gladly sell the humble pier fisherman some wiggling live bait, too.
