Local microbrewery Palmetto Brewing Co. has been bottling and kegging four styles of beer since the early ’90s: amber ale, pale ale, porter, and pale lager. The mahogany-colored porter is the most sophisticatedly malty of the bunch. Unusually hoppy in flavor and aroma for the style, it’s actually very delicately balanced — more of an Americanized take on the sweeter British classic style. Palmetto Porter pushes big caramel, chocolate, and roasted malt flavor profile as well. Brewer/owner Ed Falkenstein admits it’s his favorite.
