The folks at Boulder, Colo.’s Avery Brewing Co. love making beers that are super-strong in both flavor and alcohol. At the roaring, six-course beer dinner event at Chai’s in October, things became increasingly wild and rowdy as head brewer Adam Avery introduced two bold ales with every course. Most were based on classic English, American, and Belgian styles of ale — and most were of an alcohol content between 8 percent and 11 percent by volume. By the final course, the patio full of attendees sounded more like a pack of Vikings at a feast than a collection of polite connoisseurs.
