The Sustainability Program at the Medical University of South Carolina is the 2008 winner of DHEC’s Outstanding College or University Waste Reduction and Recycling Program. MUSC beat out 80 other schools based on the education efforts, expansion, and measured success. During the past year the Sustainability team, headed by Christine von Kolnitz Cooley, recycled over 1,300 tons of municipal solid waste. The university promotes their recycling program to the 11,000 faculty members, staff, and students of MUSC and provide over 1,400 locations for paper collection. They even save a pretty penny by shredding their own paper, $200,000 saved to be exact. —Candice Summers
