Charleston County Councilman Paul Thurmond says he doesn’t want to run against Congressman Henry Brown, a fellow Republican who is already facing potential primary challenges from others in the party.

Carroll Campbell announced last week that he is considering a run against fellow Brown for the 1st Congressional District seat. The Post and Courier threw an extra name in the hat, stating that Thurmond had been encouraged to run.

Thurmond says he is not interested in running against Brown, a five-term Congressman.

“I consider Henry a friend and I think he’s doing a great job,” Thurmond says.

Brown saw stiff competition in November, winning reelection by four percent against Democrat Linda Ketner. Some have speculated that Brown may be looking to retire after this term.
