Fresh from its recent designation as a National Cancer Center Institute, the MUSC Hollins Cancer Center was the focus of this weekend’s Gourmet & Grapes event at the Sanctuary Resort on Kiawah Island. Saturday evening’s Wine Odyssey and Live Auction proved to be a philanthropic highlight of the weekend, as lots garnered top dollar. The funds were matched by a state grant, and in total amounted to well over $100,000 for cancer research at the center. Naturally, the culinary leanings of the event were a highlight. With wines from the Duckhorn Wine Company and heavy hors d’oeuvres by FIG’s Mike Lata, McCrady’s Sean Brock, and the Fat Hen’s Fred Neuville, guests were left with a satisfied palate and droopy eyelids. Attendees finished off the evening with a proper sugar high from the Champagne and Sweets afterglow, a spread of cakes, bon bons, and other confections.
