City Paper caught some great shows last week. Some were covered in this week’s Concert Reviews. Stratton Lawrence attended a hoppin’ Wednesday night “barn jam” show at Awendaw Green as well.
This week’s “barn jam” series continues on Wed. April 1 at 6:30 p.m. with colorful sets from Texas troubadour Dylan Snead, country-blues act Megan Jean and company, and N.C. songwriter Nikki Talley.
Here’s a review:
Awendaw Green, Wed. March 25
A special thing happens when a venue and a band meant for each other finally connect. Such was the case at Awendaw Green last Wednesday (March 25). The rain didn’t deter the faithful from making the trek up Highway 17 for the occasion, and those in attendance were duly rewarded. Built into a rustic but sturdy old barn, the covered stage at the Green combines a modern PA with round-the-fire intimacy.
Holy Ghost ate it up, working a small but enthusiastic crowd of dancers into a frenzy. Even new songs from the Tent Revival sound familiar, prompting enthusiastic chorus sing-alongs. After the show, a half dozen people grabbed instruments and joined the band in an impromptu jam session that stretched late into the rainy night. —Stratton Lawrence
