A small and preppy crowd dug the ShemDig kick-off last Thursday on Shem Creek. Perhaps a bit more laid-back than expected, the first of several weekly evening parties presented by Red’s Ice House and East Coast Entertainment grooved at a pretty mellow pace. Early on, folks nursed bottles of Bud and cups of Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka cocktails along the dock and outside deck, then moved inside to the nicely renovated but sparsely furnished main building with Plane Jane (pictured), where the dance floor filled up by the band’s final set. Daytime disc jockey Morgen, from local classic rock station Q104.5, was on hand as well. As a native of Mt. Pleasant, it’s nice to see the old Trawler building (recently open as Big Game Billfish Bar & Grill) and its familiar lighthouse put to use as a nice social gathering spot. Two years ago, there was talk about the place getting knocked down to make way for a big hotel. Here’s hoping the Landing at Shem Creek sticks around as a waterfront party house. This week’s ShemDig features Atlanta funk band the Maxx. Most of the spring schedule is available at theshemdig.com.
