On Thurs., May 14, Wilmington-based style columnist and shopping extraordinaire Jess James is hosting a Style Swap at the Music Farm from 7-9 p.m. Inspired by “swishing parties” in the U.K., she started Style Swaps in N.C., and — lucky us — she’s expanding to Charleston. Here’s the gist: bring gently-used, fashionable items that have been hibernating in your closet and walk away with something fabulous and new-to-you. And please, leave that ugly, stained, ’90s prom dress at home. No one wants that. Here’s how Jess describes it: “Each guest is given personalized tags to mark the items of their choice leaving their sartorial karmic fate to be determined by drawings and for the most coveted items of the night — a good old-fashioned game of musical chairs!” Besides enjoying this eco- and wallet-friendly method of sprucing up your wardrobe, there will be hors d’oeuvres and drink specials, prizes from local stores and designers (like Jane Pope), a beauty station, and networking with Charleston style mavens like Ayoka Lucas. The cost is $15/advance, $25/door. Oh, and they’ll also be collecting professional attire donations for Dress For Success. Who wants a ’50s-style belted black dress worn only once? I’ll have it at the Swap. Please bring me something good!
