We get a two-fer with the return of Basil Twist. He’s the puppeteer who set the Sleeping Beauty story to puppets in 2005. This year, he brings with him a shamisen player named Yumiko Tanaka.

A shamisen is a three-string guitar that sounds out of tune to Western ears. Tanaka accompanies Twist and his production of Dogugaeshi, a puppet show that has just one puppet amid a matrix of slides. Check out this video for more.

Meanwhile, Tanaka gives a recital as part of Spoleto’s Music in Time series. Really looking forward to that. JS
