The City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review recently approved Mad River’s design plans for a smoking patio behind the Market Street bar. It also approved a storefront change for the Five Guys burger joint that’s under construction on King Street in the old Cold Stone Creamery location.

With a ban of indoor smoking nearly two years ago, smokers at popular bars and restaurants such as Mad River have been forced to use the city sidewalks as their hang-out. Last month, the city’s zoning board gave its approval for the Mad River patio to provide an alternative. The Board of Architectural Review approved the outdoor patio that will include a brick wall and a retractable awning located at the back entrance of the restaurant.

Plans for the Five Guys restaurant at 364 King St. caused some conversation with its step away from the shopping district’s traditional look. The board approved a dark, wood-framed entrance with small windows lining the top of the storefront.

A request for a right-angle sign hanging out front did not fare as well. The Board said they try to keep the store signage visually appealing and consistent to attract tourists and locals. The board refused the sign request, due to staff suggestions that, if one place does it, everyone will want to do it and the mass amount will not be visually appealing. The designers are scheduled to make another pitch for the sign at the May 27 meeting.

In other patio news, Mellow Mushrooms upstairs deck is well underway. Manager Josh Broome tells us they’ve bandied about an August 1 date.
