Those little signs I told you about, the ones that people were waving at the Spoleto opening ceremony Friday morning, the ones with a black-and-white picture of Charles Wadsworth on them — turns out these were planned all along. Every year, vendors are on hand selling cold drinks, snacks, and balloons for kids. At first I thought some enterprising vendor has gotten the inside scoop on Wadsworth’s retirement as head of Spoleto chamber music series. This would be a good time to capitalize on audiences affection for him. In fact, this was planned by the festival’s development division. And they are fans (which you needed if you were standing in the sun Friday morning) and on the back of the fan it says: “I’m a Charles Wadsworth fan.” As a Spoleto staffer explained to me, there’s no disputing this fact. They are indeed Wadsworth fans! -JS
