Charleston Mayor Joe Riley announced tonight that the city had received an anonymous gift of $20 million toward the rehabilitation of the Gaillard Auditorium.
Over the past few years, the city has been on a rehabpalooza, gutting and refitting the City Hall, the Memminger Auditorium, and (currently) the Dock Street Theatre. While Gaillard upgrades had been a likely next step, the financing for such an ambitious undertaking seemed out of reach.
Not any more.
The consensus had been that the venerable Gaillard Auditorium … ideally would benefit and get a restoration.
It had been in our thoughts.
We kind of considered that if we built another one, we’d build it where the Gaillard is. It’s the perfect location and the building is already there.
There’s lots of work to be done with City Council. We do have the wonderful, generous optimistic gift.
