Folly Beach has been changing at superwarp speed lately, what with all the new restaurants and even a putt-putt course for crying out loud. Now, they’ve got the cutest little crepe stand ever. Yukari Yucca and John Baker have set Tokyo Crepes on the edge of a parking lot at 110 E. Ashley Ave. The funky little truck has been fitted with a wooden platform that’s festooned with handpainted signs and a row of red-and-white peppermint lights. The menu is super cheap, with both savory and sweet crepes ranging in price from $3.25 to $4.75.

“Crepe stands are pretty huge in Japan,” says Yukari, who explains that the biggest difference between French and Japanese crepes are the fillings. “French crepes generally contain cooked fillings like caramelized apples. Japanese crepes, on the other hand, contain uncooked fillings like strawberries. In addition to normal crepe fillings like nutella, banana, mix berry and strawberries, we also have funkier fillings like ice cream, homemade custard pudding, falafel, and spicy corn with cheese.”

We stopped by for lunch today and had the Mid East Miracle ($4.75) and the Spicy Corn Cheese ($4). Both were very tasty and came wrapped in a cone shape. Yukari touts the benefits of folding it this way: “Not only does this shape ensure that each bite nets a mouthful of crepe, it’s also super convenient. Easy to hold, you can munch on these crepes while walk to the beach. Or while you walk your dog.”

We sat on the two of the four colorful chairs set in the shade beneath a tree and munched ours. Another couple had stopped by to order one of the 17 dessert crepes and were amused to see spinach in my Mid East Miracle, which also had falafel and feta cheese with ranch dressing. The crepes were fresh and toothsome and are probably very good stuffed with sweet stuff. They’re also open for breakfast and have three breakfast crepes every morning from 7-11 a.m. A $5 special includes OJ or coffee and a crepe.

Tokyo Crepes keeps lengthy hours. They’re closed Monday, except holidays, but are open Tue.-Wed., 7 a.m.-10:30 p.m. and Thurs.-Sun., 7 a.m.-2:30 a.m. Yes, that means you can get a late-night nosh in before hitting the hay.

We’ll be checking out their summer special before the weekend’s out. The Arctic Crepe has banana, whipped cream, choco syrup, choco chip, and strawberry ice cream for $4.75.
