College of Charleston professor John Bruns is making waves in the world of comedy. With the release of his first book, Loopholes: Reading Comically, Bruns takes a serious look at comedy and the way it’s been analyzed by sociologists, psychologists, historians, literary critics, and philosophers over the centuries.
According to Bruns, “There seemed very little written about comedy that was written in the spirit of comedy, or that came from a comic perspective. Most of it was just so cynical.” In an effort to change this, Bruns went against the advice of his colleagues and wrote about something that was not necessarily current and edgy, but rather something that he felt passionate about. “I’ve loved comedy all my life, so I chose that,” he says. With the release of his new book, Bruns hopes that people will start to take the genre of comedy more seriously, that they’ll begin to view it as more than just a low form of creative expression.
