Coming to the Gibbes Museum of Art this month is an exploration of folk art brought to us by the Smithsonian. The traveling exhibition, Ancestry & Innovation: African American Art from the American Folk Art Museum runs from July 31 to Oct. 11 and explores a range of art from self-taught African American artists. With ten quilts and close to 30 works in various other media forms, there are pieces from older generations, contemporary masters, and up-and-coming artists.
“The unique presentation of vibrant quilts in conjuction with sculpture and painting enriches the viewer’s appreciation for the complexity and vitality of African American expression,” says exhibition curator Stacy Hollander.
The Gibbes Museum of Art opened its doors to the public in 1905 and this exhibition complements the museum’s rich artistic culture while keeping an eye on historically relevant pieces.
Current exhibitions Prop Master and Jeff Whetstone’s Post Pleistocene are on view through July 19.
