Charleston band scene veteran Scott Sain — a guitarist with local party band Plane Jane — has stayed busy this year engineering a number of studio projects at Blacktree Studios, his recording facility on Johns Island. Recent sessions have included some jingles for the Wild Wing Café, bluegrass quartet the Bushels, nine-piece cover band Coast Runner, funk/rock cover band SuperDeluxe, and Sam Colston (from Millennium K Entertainment), among others.
Outside of the studio, however, Sain has been literally gearing up for a completely different project — Volkswagen drag racing in his 1966 Turbo Beetle. He’s set to race alongside many other motorists at VW Drag Night up in Greeleyville at the Midway Drag Strip on Sat. July 11 (it’s 12 miles past St. Stephen along Highway 52).
“One of my redneck hobbies is drag racing old VWs,” Sain says. “I have a small collection of them, and I wanted to bring other people to this area for a night race. I have quite a few big names in the VW world coming to the race from California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and lots of other faraway places.”
Camping will be allowed at the Greeleyville track. Sunday July 12 will be the rain date at the same location. Admission is $15 (children 12 and under are free).
As a pre-race kickoff, Plane Jane is scheduled to play a “cruise-in” party at Freshfield’s Village (by Kiawah Island) on Fri. July 10 at 5 p.m. Contact Sain at Blacktree at (843) 557-0785, or visit myspace.com/planejanerocks and vwdragnight.com for more information.
