The Post and Courier reports today that after an embarrassing amount of trash was cleaned up by volunteers after the Fourth of July, and Folly Beach council will consider banning alcohol on the beach.

Can’t say we’re too surprised by the move. South Carolinians are notoriously ignorant when it comes to littering. How many times have you seen a car toss out an entire bag of fast food trash as they barrel down the highway? The state has actually had to launch an initiative — Palmetto Pride — in order to educate the masses on the lesson most of us learned back in the 70s. Remember the “Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute” owl? Or what about the crying Native American who begged us to Keep America Beautiful?

What do we need here in Charleston to get beachgoers and boaters to give a crap about the environment?

Do you think banning alcohol on Folly will do anything to prevent littering?
