Gradual Lean is pretty much a superstar jazz power trio. After several years of weekly jammin’ at downtown venues, the longtime Charleston acoustic/electric combo — drummer Quentin Baxter, guitarist Lee Barbour, and bassist Kevin Hamilton — only occasionally gets together in town these days. The last time they performed in town was at the Jazz Artists of Charleston’s “Upstairs at Mistral” series (during Piccolo Spoleto) at Mistral. It was a sizzling set.

The trio is set to reconvene on Sat. Sept. 12 at Eye Level Art: 103 (103 Spring St., 843-425-3576) at 8 p.m. Expect a cool and funky set of instrumental improv and interpretation. These cats play aggressively, twisting bits of bebop, samba, and prog-rock into something more contemporary. Admission is $12 (and $8 advance).
