GOP gubernatorial hopeful Gresham Barrett, also a Congressman from South Carolina’s 3rd District, says no to legalized marijuana, but in the nicest way possible.

One commenter at weed website mmjspots.com contacted Barrett’s office to ask if he supported legalized marijuana and Barrett gave the traditional (but in no way surprising) gateway drug response. Barrett’s office confirmed the letter.

Health organizations, such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Cancer Society, do not support the legalization of cannabis. The AMA actually views it as a dangerous drug and a public health concern when used recreationally and even encourages strong discretion in its use for patients as the effects of long-term use are unclear.

He went on to note the law enforcement concerns as well. What really surprised us was his level of civility. It was quite likely a form response, but there was nothing about hippie water or welfare moms.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me and applaud your activism on this issue. … Although we respectfully disagree on this issue, I value your input. I hope you will always contact me whenever you have concerns with any issue under consideration in Congress.

Doesn’t Barrett know that civility is dead?! That S.C. congressmen aren’t going to be muzzled?!
