Cable news loves showing footage of the bombast and finger biting that has emanated from healthcare town hall debates. We’re all looking for clarity and understanding about the new legislation being proposed.

The League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area will hold a forum titled “Health Care Reform: What’s Next?” This is a free event featuring guest speakers Teresa Arnold, associate state director for advocacy at the state AARP, and Elizabeth Burt, director of federal and member advocacy for the S.C. Hospital Association. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wed., Oct. 7, in the Charleston County School District Board Room at 75 Calhoun St.

Let’s take a deep breath and talk about the facts.

Walk a mile for someone else’s shoes

Beginning Oct. 1, Bulldog Tours will give $1 to charity for every mile walked by one of its tour guides, who typically give six to eight one-mile tours a day this time of year. The company will also give $1 for every local tour guest from the tri-county region. The proceeds benefit Family Connection South Carolina, a nonprofit that assists the parents of disabled children by offering counseling, workshops, and other services.

Bulldog, which offers culinary, ghost, and history tours, says it has donated over $1.2 million to preserve local historic sites since its founding in 2001. For more info, visit bulldogtours.com.

Don’t forget to vote

Whether you’re casting your vote on policy issues, or because of parking ticket fines, it’s important to be involved.

Charleston area voters will be heading to the polls on Nov. 3 for eight municipal elections, including Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Seabrook Island, Ravenel, Rockville, Awendaw, and McClellanville.

You have until Oct. 3 to register to vote. Absentee ballots are available at the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration at 4367 Headquarters Road in North Charleston, or via mail by calling (843) 744-8683. Candidates for each ballot are listed at vote.charlestoncounty.org.

This may not be a Diddy “Vote or Die” situation, but as long as you pay taxes make sure they’re being put to good use.
