Charlestonians love any excuse to party, and a holiday based on dressing in outlandish costumes and embracing wild tendencies is a perfect match for our bar scene. Revelers started early Saturday, though it was hard to tell if that was due to their inability to quell the excitement of donning a ridiculous get-up, or if the Gamecocks’ three turn-overs to the Volunteers led them to drinking. By 9:30 p.m., the sidewalks of King Street were filled with costumed party-goers, making the path to preferred watering holes look like an eclectic parade. Heading out early was a wise move — Lines started forming close to midnight and most venues began charging a cover after 10. We even heard that a few places got shut down early.

At Trio, Soul Fish kicked things off a little before 11 with Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle With You,” which had a peculiarly literal translation with what seemed like clowns and jokers scattered throughout the club. Costumes, as always, ranged from ingenious to un-inventive to X-rated. Although most who flocked to Trio to celebrate All Hallows Eve took dressing up seriously, there were a few on the slack side; were the scrubs and orthopedic shoes a result of having just left work or a serious lack of ideas?
