Downtown attorney Michael Seekings narrowly unseated Yvonne Evans and Blake Hallman will be taking an open West Ashley seat on Charleston City Council, according to unofficial results Tuesday. And James Island’s Kathleen Wilson won reelection.
District 10, representing a portion West Ashley, will be decided in a runoff election Nov. 17 between Dean Riegel and Ginger Rosenberg
Seekings ran an energetic campaign in District 8, offering fresh blood for City Council. He focused much of his campaign on improved pedestrian and bike access, as well as traffic-calming measures like landscaped medians. Evans was the longest serving member on council.
The District 2 election had three untested candidates running for an open seat. But Hallman distinguished himself through his experience leading the charge for the preservation of Morris Island, a significant Civil War relic in danger of private development.
Wilson, who only had four years to hang her hat on, focused on her success in improving the relationship between James Island residents and city staff, as well as her strong pitch for expanding recreational opportunities — a leading quality of life issue on James Island.
