After enduring the (secretly-jealous) barbs of friends who mocked us for wanting to spend Friday night watching George Lucas’ space epic, we headed out to the North Charleston Coliseum for Star Wars: In Concert. Surprisingly, the place was packed with fellow geeks eager for the chance to hear the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra perform John Williams’ epic tunes — not to mention seeing C-3PO (aka Anthony Daniels) in the flesh. As the lights dimmed in the Coliseum, the glow of costumed kids’ light sabers shone throughout the stands, as the orchestra jumped right into the saga’s most recognizable music. A three-story screen was set up at the back of the stage, showing scenes from all six movies in the series. When Daniels took the stage, his voice — if not his face — was instantly recognizable, and he received a rock star’s welcome from the crowd. He led the audience through some of Star War’s major plot points — Luke and Leia’s relationship, the transformation of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader, and even the impact of droids on the galaxy. Between the movie scenes, the music, and occasional special effects — like fire leaping from the stage — we got the general sense that any symphony performance or movie screening from here on out would seem downright boring.
Rockin’ out with C-3PO and the Royal Philharmonic
