The wife of Gov. Mark Sanford has filed for divorce, saying in a statement, “many unsuccessful efforts at reconciliation” have failed. The news follows a recent national interview in which Jenny Sanford told Barbara Walters that she’d been dealing with her husband’s infidelity for nearly a year.

During a one-month separation in June, the governor stole away for a six-day trip to see his mistress in Argentina. After the story that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail turned out to be a lie, the governor admitted publicly to the year-long affair with Maria Belen Chapur. He later called his mistress his soulmate, but pledged to try to learn to love his wife again.

After dodging a pivotal impeachment vote in the legislature earlier this week, the governor was hopeful about his chances for reconciliation with his wife.

But Jenny Sanford released a statement this morning to permanently douse those flames.

“I know it will soon become known so I choose to release this brief notice that I am now filing for divorce,” she said.”Please know the boys and I are doing well and are blessed with the incredible support of friends and family and bolstered by our faith and the unfailing love of our God above.“
