Peninsula Grill’s Robert Carter has proven that country cooking can still be about good food, cheap.

Carter appeared on the CBS Early Show back in September for the “Chefs on a Shoestring” challenge and whipped up a three-course Lowcountry extravaganza with Southern eggs benedict, shrimp with pimento cheese grits, and coconut cake for a mere $32.24. He also poured the TV hosts a sly taste of Firefly Vodka.

This week, Carter learned that he’d won the entire three-month competition, which required challengers to prepare a meal for under $35, and beat out a whole host of competitors that ranged from chefs like David Chang (Momofuku), George Mendes (Aldea), and Paul Liebrandt (Corton) to cookbook authors Matt and Ted Lee and the Food Network’s Deen Brothers.

As the winner, Carter has been invited back to the program this Saturday, Dec. 19 to prepare a blowout, Southern-style holiday menu.
