Fred Shapiro, associate librarian and lecturer in legal research at Yale Law School, has just released his fourth annual list of The Yale Book of Quotations and South Carolinians claimed three of the ten most memorable lines of 2009. An unidentified protester at a Simpsonville town hall meeting took top billing last July with a sign that read: “Keep your government hands off my Medicare.”
“That struck me as embodying the friction and polarization on the role of government,” Shapiro said.
Second district Congressman Joe Wilson placed fourth with his “You lie!” outburst at President Obama on the floor of the House of Representatives in September.
And Gov. Mark Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer came in at Number 9 with his contribution, “The Governor is hiking the Appalachian Trail.”
South Carolinians just have a way with words, don’t we?
