Brad Ball of Social Restaurant + Wine Bar is the only Charlestonian to qualify for the regional round of the Young Sommelier Competition to be held in Greenville next Sat. Feb. 20.

The goal of the competition, which is hosted by La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, is to promote the expertise of wine and spirit professionals and mastery of wine and spirit knowledge. In order to reach the regional level, the competitors must fill out an application and pass the local level test, which is an online theory exam. The exam consists of multiple choice and short answer questions and an essay. Questions range from knowledge of different regions to varieties. The top four sommeliers of the regional competition will move on to the national round to be held in May.

Along with participating in this competition, Ball, who is a certified sommelier, is currently attempting to become an advanced sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers. Ball was the first Charlestonian to receive a Diploma of Wine and Spirits, which took him two and a half years to achieve.
