When they say, “drink like a sailor”, they’re not kidding, and they’re probably referring to the revelers at the Charleston Race Week’s Beach Party on Saturday night. Sailors from around the world gathered after the day’s regattas at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina to drink and talk about the day’s races. With an open bar on site, there wasn’t a person there without at least one drink in hand, and there were smiles on the sun-burned faces of winners and losers alike.
Weaving through the little groups of chatting sailors and race watchers, the atmosphere felt more like a big, salty family reunion than anything else. The party was mostly populated by boatmen, with the few females on hand left to the mercy of the hit-on gods. These guys were pretty up-front with the ladies of their interest, and we even received a spontaneous proposal.
Guitarist Calvin Taylor played for an empty dance floor. Apparently, these guys don’t like to dance. The less rowdy of the bunch could be found sitting around one of the fire pits or tables. The event may have ended at 9 p.m., but most of the crowd was making plans to head out downtown and continue to party hardy.
