When standing on stage with a talented troupe of comedians at an improv contest, the last label you want is “competitor.” For Theatre 99’s second annual Three-on-Three Improv Tournament, the comedy venue and school offered the City Paper the first slot on the first night of the tournament. We fielded contributors Jason Zwiker, Nick Smith, and myself. The camaraderie among all the contestants was tremendous, and the generosity of the audience was amazing — offering laughter before we got our first joke out. I think someone even laughed when I said, “Poop.” God bless you, mysterious stranger, whoever you were (Mom). We were laughing just as hard as the crowd for the skilled jokesters who followed us. The guys in Full Monterey Jack Cheese Quesadilla randomly took their clothes off throughout the eight-minute routine, while So Good You’ll Think There’s 4 of Them, dressed as Charleston tourists with sombreros, started its act by asking for someone in the audience to take the team’s picture. Both teams advanced to the finals, along with Team Trainwreck! and Wild Card. The third round of prelims is Friday, followed by the final round Saturday.
