Charleston tourists and drunk bargoers now have a few more rickshaws to hail for a ride home.
The city has historically only allowed 15 rickshaws on downtown streets at a time. After refusing a request for more slots last summer, the Charleston City Council approved a plan last week that would tentatively allow six more of the bike taxis.
The six extra rickshaws can only run from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends. The industry will be monitored for the next six months to determine any increase in citizen complaints, traffic congestion, or safety issues. A staff report in November will help City Council determine whether the additional rickshaws should be continued.
