On Tuesday night, there was no reason to be ashamed of drinking like a fish. Or maybe we should make that drinking with a fish. Or better yet, drinking with a couple hundred fish, a bald eagle, and many other creatures, including plenty of high-heeled humans. Using infused vodkas, the traditional mint-and-simple-syrup combo, and a shot or two of creativity, 16 contestants vied for Charleston’s livers to raise money for the South Carolina Special Olympics at this year’s Bacardi Mojito Challenge. An early favorite was the Thoroughbred Club, who made their drink with Cheerwine and an ambitious Twizzler reduction (I was told it takes an hour to extract the candy’s flavor). But the common theme of the night seemed to be spice; multiple cocktails were spiked with different kinds of peppers or even ginger. Once again, Coast took home a prize, winning the People’s Choice award for their cucumber and honeydew concoction, which featured a speared slice of the vegetable floating in the glass. The judge’s choice (and easily one of my top three) was O-ku’s passion fruit and habanero mojito.
A sign near the entrance to the aquarium displayed numbers for various cab companies; we’re sure that they got some good business that night.
