I remember, a few years ago, a male in my family (possibly my own dad) complained that there was way more hype over Mother’s Day than Father’s Day. I’m not sure if that was ever true, but it certainly isn’t the case now; there’s plenty of places to take dad this Sunday.
The S.C. Aquarium is offering a pretty good deal on Sunday, giving free admission to all fathers with a paying guest or child. They’ll also work a Father’s Day theme into their regularly scheduled programs, such as the interactive dives.
Woodlands Inn in Summerville is serving up a double helping of Father’s Day events. First, on Saturday, it’s upscale grilling out (and dad doesn’t have to man the tongs, like at home) with their Beer and BBQ Tasting featuring Palmetto Brewery. It’s $55 (plus tax and gratuity), which covers four courses: grilled shrimp, togarashi, pickled watermelon rind, and cucumber; Carolina-style smoked chicken and pulled pork with Anson Mills grits; a main course of Moroccan spiced Lamb, tangine, and saffron couscous; and a dessert of warm chocolate and espresso cake with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. Of course, there’s also beer pairings with each course, and dad even gets an after-dinner cigar and bourbon. Reservations are required. Then, on Sunday, Woodlands will have a buffet-style Father’s Day brunch featuring items like pork BBQ benedict, beef strip loin with red-eye gravy, shrimp and grits, and oyster roast, among others. There will also be a kids’ menu. Once again, the price is $55 plus tax and gratuity, and it’s $14 for kids (4-12).
Try something a little more casual at The Dog & Duck Food, where dads can try any new hot dog on the menu with a side of fries for free. You have to present the coupon, available in this week’s CP and on the Dog & Duck website, to enjoy the special. Head out to the Folly for some Father’s Day specials at Loggerhead’s Beach Grill: a broiled sea scallop dinner for $15.99, fried grouper dinner for $13.99, and linguini and clams in a garlic wine sauce for $12.99. Halls Chophouse also has a gospel brunch.
If you’re dad’s more the adventurous type, or at least he likes to pretend like he’s the adventurous type, you can bond with him on a kayaking trip with Sea Kayak Carolina. The tour heads out at 7:30 a.m. to the launch point at Battery Island and then on to Sandy Point at Kiawah Island. Kayaks are available for rental at $30 each, and there’s doubles available. You’ll have to call ahead to reserve your rental, and, of course, it’s free if you BYOK (that’s kayak, not keg).
Similarly, Nature Adventure Outfitters is doing a special on tours and rentals for dads: it’s half-off for all dads and free if they come with a family of four or more.
We think any of these meals or activities would be better than getting dad another tie.
