All of the City of Charleston’s parking meters are now equipped to accept prepaid SmartCards. The city launched a pilot program using the cards nearly 18 months ago, while slowly upgrading all of the city’s 1,800 meters.

Cards have previously only been available at the traffic and transportation office on Lockwood Boulevard, but they’re now offered for purchase and reloading at the Charleston Visitor Center gift shop at 375 Meeting St.

Cards are $5 and money can be loaded in $1 increments using cash, debit, or credit cards. Users can also insert the card back into the meter to have unused time refunded.
