The Slow Food movement is picking up pace here in Charleston. Ten local supporters of the movement were recently selected as delegates for Terra Madre, a bi-annual event in Torino, Italy. Those chosen from among thousands of applicants include Elizabeth Beak and Tecoria Jones of Lowcountry First, Chef Craig Deihl of Cypress, Chef Mike Lata of FIG, Ann Caldwell of the Magnolia Singers, educational consultant Dena Davis, Darlena Goodwin of the Children’s Garden Project, Gullah performer Sharon Murray, farmer Gra Moore, and Alluette Jones-Smalls of Alluette’s Café. Additionally, local farmers Joseph and Helen Fields were chosen to attend through the Slow Food Savannah chapter.
Slow Food Charleston is able to fund the travel expenses of all of Charleston’s representatives thanks to a recent donation of $22,500 from the BB&T Charleston Wine and Food Festival. For five days starting Oct. 21, Terra Madre attendees will attend seminars, field trips, and presentations that examine the future of sustainable agriculture.
