The driver of the Jeep in the fatal collision with cyclist Edwin Gardner has been ticketed for following too close. The Charleston Police Department has also exonerated Gardner of any responsibility after, at first, claiming he was solely to blame.
In the July 21 accident, Gardner’s bike was lodged near the front of the Jeep, dragging him about 15 feet down the neighborhood street.
The officer on the scene accepted the claim of driver Charlotte White that she was trying to safely pass Gardner when the cyclist moved out in front of her.
But the department noted in a release Friday afternoon that further interviews and analysis of the scene led to the department to charge White for following too close. The release notes that Gardner was in fact not a contributor to the collision. She will now have a hearing in Charleston Municipal Court, according to the release.
