Organized by members of the Lowcountry Blues Club, the Lowcountry Blues Challenge is a month-long series of shows that starts in mid-August and leads up to a grand finale on Sun. Sept. 26. The winner of the Challenge will be sent to Memphis this winter to represent Charleston and compete in the 2010 International Blues Challenge, presented by The Blues Foundation. Additional sponsors include The Big Guy Blues, Ye Olde Music Shop, Steve Simon Productions, Encore Music, and Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ.

“Since we are an affiliate of the National Blues Foundation, we have the opportunity to nominate one band, one solo/duo, and one youth act to the International Blues Challenge for 2011,” says Lowcountry Blues Club’s Tim Shaw. “Last year, we nominated Dan Wright & The New Beat along with Sarah Cole & Friends. Both acts put the Lowcountry on the map for the blues.”

The first round of the Lowcountry Blues Challenge takes place at Home Team BBQ in West Ashley at 2 p.m. on Sun. Aug. 15 with sets from Jeff Norwood, Super Kush, Starling, and the Hwy. 17 Blues Band. See Music Board and for more.
