I should have warned my date. We met Friday evening for What If? Production’s premiere of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and upon entering the American Theater, the ladies from Allure Salon insisted on giving him a drag makeover. When I finally found him, he was wearing the most electric blue eyeshadow and ravishing red lipstick I’d see on a man or woman since the ’80s. This may have led to him later being pulled up on stage by Hedwig herself (aka Brian Porter) for a punk dance-off. He had some lovely moves.
Before the Hedwig performance, Brandy Valentine and Betty Rocker of Bizzaro Burlesque treated audience members to some rousing singing and strip-teasing. I was surprised when my bespectacled, Birkenstock-wearing neighbor let out a loud hoot as the final layers came off. This audience had spunk!
The intimate setting of the theater was perfect for the performance as Hedwig roamed the audience, inviting patrons to find her backstage later. Blushing ensued. Justin Bieber lesbian jokes, wild gyrations, and flying bananas made for a wonderful evening at the theater. Next time, however, I’ll remember to wear more eyeliner so my date doesn’t show me up.
