Who doesn’t love nachos? They’re chips covered in cheese, veggies, meats, and other toppings. Plus, they’re a great substitution for an entrée. In honor of our new American holiday the Super Bowl, we’ve searched high and low to find out who has the best nachos in Chucktown.

If you’re headed to the Kickin’ Chicken for the big game, be sure to check out their massive mound of nachos. All ingredients are made fresh daily, and those tasty chips are topped with a pepper jack cheese sauce, mixed cheeses, lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapeños, sour cream, and salsa on the side. Meat eaters have the choice of chicken or chili. “We have the best fucking nachos in town,” says Chip Roberts, co-founder of the Kickin’ Chicken. The mound will cost you around $10.

On Upper King Street, Juanita Greenberg’s has a different take on nachos. Instead of chips, Juanita’s serves a pizza-sized tortilla underneath all of the toppings. “Our nachos are famous for their unique style and they’re great,” says Jenna Watson, a bartender at Juanitas. Pieces are cut into slices for you to munch on. The nachos royale dish comes with lettuce, house made pico de gallo, black beans, Monterey Jack cheese, salsa, and sour cream. Meat fiends have the option of chicken, sausage, steak, shrimp, or Mahi Mahi. Meat can be doubled for a little more scratch. These nachos won’t cost you more than $10.

Near the bridge on Huger Street, Taco Boy is a great location for nacho aficionados. “Our chips are made fresh daily from Macho Tortilla Company on Johns Island,” says Ben Davidson, a manager at the restaurant. Taco Boy hits your chips with two different cheeses: a house made chile con queso and Monterey Jack. The chips are layered so the top chips don’t get all the topping love. Stacked on top are fresh salsa cruda, guacamole, sour cream, and seasoned pinto beans. On request, guests can top their nacho extravaganza with chicken, steak, or pork. With a meat topping, the dish will run around $10.

Over on James Island, the Smoky Oak Taproom has all your nacho dreams in mind. Smoky Oak makes sure all toppings are fresh and fry their own tortilla chips daily. Piled on top of the chips is shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, olives, Spanish onions, salsa, and a house-made queso. For meat lovers, Smokey Oak gives you the choice of pulled smoked chicken, pulled pork, chili, or chorizo. If meats aren’t your favorite, vegetarian nachos are available. “Upon request, we will top our nachos with anything that we have,” says Michael Ruggiero, a chef at Smoky Oak. “What’s great about our nachos is that the chips are thick, so you get a good assortment of toppings with every bite.” The nachos at Smokey House cost $10.

After checking out an art house flick at the Terrace instead of the Super Bowl, head next door to Zia Taqueria, which serves some of the most unique nachos in town. Instead of slathering all of the toppings onto chips, Zia’s tops each individual corn tostada shell with black beans and Mexican Style Monterey jack cheese. Each nacho platter is served with a side of guacamole, jalapeño relish, and sour cream. For carnivores, Zia’s offers a great choice of toppings for nachos like chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, and even a portabella mushroom. “The nachos we serve are a more traditional southwestern Mexican style,” says Ivey Anderson, a bartender at Zia’s. “They’re delicious and I think they’re the best in town.” With all of the variations on meat toppings, the nachos are between $8-$11.
