I tend to stick close to home on Sundays, reading the paper, making a late breakfast, and letting the kids frolic, but yesterday, we got invited to check out the new brunch offerings at El Bohio. The friends and family preview was an opportunity for them to work out some kinks and get feedback on the food. Brunch officially starts Sunday, April 17. The menu ranges from hoecakes and huevos rancheros to pork belly BLTs, benedicts, and breakfast burritos. Overall, everything we tried was pretty good.

The deviled eggs were tasty (but the mixed greens were wasted. Just put them on a smaller plate next time and you won’t need the garnish.)

Ham salad sandwiches. I could have eaten the whole plate. The savory ham salad came on a sweet brioche type of bread. Nice combo.

Huevos rancheros, Cuban style.

I opted for the Cuban breakfast. Nice and simple with poached eggs, black beans and rice, and fried plantains.

A benedict being eaten by a child as if it was a sandwich. Bad manners.

With the sprawling new front patio and a sangria or mimosa, El Bohio is a great new option for brunch for James Islanders.
