Already in its third year, the annual, Funk Fest brings a roster of old-school R&B, funk, and hip-hop artists to the Lowcountry on Sat. June 18. This year’s lineup includes Maze (featuring Frankie Beverly), Anthony Hamilton, Doug E. Fresh, SOS Band, and more.
The two previous concerts took place at the Family Circle Cup Stadium on Daniel Island. This year’s showcase goes down at the Exchange Park Fairgrounds in Ladson (9850 Hwy. 78).
Charlotte-based promoter Leo Bennett, of Variety Entertainment, started organizing Funk Fest concerts in 2001. He describes them as “a celebration of human expression that promotes social consciousness, positive entertainment, and personal fulfillment.” Bennett believes the event has grown into a larger venue. “The Charleston market has embraced Funk Fest immensely to the point we’ve moved to a larger location,” he says. “The Fairgrounds offer hassle-free parking, and we are encouraging everyone to bring their lawn chairs and to sit back and relax. The show is going to be off the chain.”
Funk Fest 2011 is co-sponsored by Star 99.7 FM. Tickets are available for $30 (general admission) and $65 (VIP seating) through Cats Music, KRS Shoes, Loco Records, Money Man Pawn locations, Monster Music and Movies, and etix.com.
