Try saying Biggie’s AcrossTown Southern Gastro Pub five times fast. It may be a mouthful, but it’ll soon become part of the Charleston bar vernacular. The new pub recently opened at the old Granville’s Cafe location at Rutledge and Grove, and we stopped by the grand opening on Thursday night to check it out.

We were thrilled to find ourselves in a place with the drink prices of a dive bar, but the atmosphere of a sleek and laid-back establishment. Upon arrival we heard rave reviews about some of the pub’s cocktails from patrons standing by the bar, including the Johns Island Mule, which features vodka, Johns Island Cantaloupe Juice, lime and Sweatman’s Ginger Beer.

Throughout the evening, Wagener Terrace locals funneled in and out, surveying their new local watering hole and hitting up the night’s free buffet of fried okra, hush puppies, pimento cheese, and other Southern favorites. Having a pub provide me with free food and cheap drinks is pretty much a life’s dream realized, and we ventured out to the outdoor seating area to give thanks and finish our drinks. “Granville’s” is still emblazoned on the front outer wall of the pub, but here’s hoping that Biggie’s sticks around longer than its former incarnation did.
