Some of Charleston’s jazz greats will jam with a few notable up-and-comers at a special benefit concert at Bowens Island Restaurant (1870 Bowens Island Road) on Sun. Oct. 23. Billed as the Sunset @ 6:04 Sunday Jazz Jam, the event takes place at the Dock Stage behind the restaurant from 5-9 p.m.

Local musician and promoter Smoky Weiner and the Charleston Jazz Club (founded in 2009 by local businessman Dennis Fassuliotis) present the marshfront concert with two core jazz groups and a few special guests.

One combo will feature guitarist Joe Wilson, sax man Lonnie Hamilton, bassist Jamie Harris, drummer Anthony Constantine, guitarist Duda Lucena, and vocalists Lindsay Goodman and Big George Collier. The second group consists of pianist Tommy Gill, bassist Wayne Mitchum, drummer David Patterson, vocalists Bobbie Storm and Smoky Weiner, and special guest clarinetist Steve Simon (of Steve Simon Presents).

Charleston Jazz Club, Awendaw Green, and Steve Simon Presents held the first Charleston Jazz Jam event at the Barn Stage at Awendaw Green in 2010. “I thought that jazz on the dock at sunset with flaming torches, great jazz, a bar, and oysters would be a good thing to do there,” Weiner says of this weekend’s event. “We’ve never done an event like this —one that is open to the public.”

Donations benefit the School of the Arts Band trio to a national competition. Full bar, oysters, and local fare. 5-9 p.m. Visit charlestonjazzclub.com for more.
